ElHNO2 es un ácido más débil en comparación con elHNO3. Se ioniza para dar iones hidronio y nitrito y tiene un valor de pKde 3,37.
Como elHNO2 es inestable, se prepara in situ haciendo reaccionar elNaNO2 con un ácido mineral fuerte, como el ácido clorhídrico o sulfúrico.
Bajo la misma condición ácida, el grupo –OH del ácido nitroso se somete a protonación para dar un ion oxonio, que pierde una molécula de agua para generar el catión nitrosilo o el ion nitrosonio.
El ion nitrosonio electrofílico puede reaccionar con el nitrógeno amina nucleofílico.
La reacción deHNO2 con aminas alifáticas y aromáticas primarias, secundarias y terciarias da como resultado diferentes productos.
Por ejemplo, las aminas primarias, tras el tratamiento conHNO2, producen sales de diazonio, mientras que las aminas secundarias producen N-nitrosaminas.
Cuando reaccionan con HNO2, las aminas alifáticas terciarias experimentan protonación para producir sales solubles en agua y compuestos N-nitrosoamónicos. Por el contrario, las arilaminas terciarias experimentan una sustitución aromática electrofílica para formar compuestos aromáticos C-nitrosos.

El ácido nitroso y el ácido nítrico son dos tipos de ácidos que contienen nitrógeno, entre los cuales el ácido nitroso es más débil que el ácido nítrico. El ácido nitroso con un valor de pK_a de 3,37 se ioniza en agua para dar un ion nitrito y un ion hidronio.


 El ácido nitroso es inestable. Por tanto, se forma in situ a partir de una solución de nitrito de sodio y ácidos acuosos fríos como el ácido clorhídrico o sulfúrico. En una solución ácida, el grupo –OH del ácido nitroso sufre una protonación para dar ion oxonio, seguido de pérdida de agua para formar ion nitrosonio. El ion nitrosonio es un electrófilo altamente reactivo que reacciona con el átomo de nitrógeno nucleofílico de una amina.


 El ácido nitroso puede reaccionar con diferentes clases de aminas, como aminas alifáticas o aromáticas primarias, secundarias y terciarias, para dar diferentes productos. Por ejemplo, el ácido nitroso reacciona con aminas primarias para formar una sal de diazonio. La reacción se llama diazotización de aminas. El ácido nitroso reacciona con aminas secundarias para producir N-nitrosamina. Nitrous acid reacts with amines in acidic conditions, and the products depend on the type of amine. It is a key nitrogen-containing acid, but it is weaker than nitric acid. Nitrous acid has a pKa of 3.37, so it ionizes in water to form nitrite ion and hydronium ion.

Nitrous acid is unstable, so it is made in situ, or formed in the reaction mixture as needed. A sodium nitrite solution is combined with a cold aqueous acid such as hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid. In acid, the –OH group of nitrous acid is protonated first. This gives an oxonium ion, which then loses water to form nitrosonium ion.

Nitrosonium ion is a highly reactive electrophile, meaning it seeks electrons. It reacts with the nucleophilic nitrogen atom of an amine. Primary amines form diazonium salts in this reaction, and this process is called diazotization. Secondary amines give N-nitrosamines instead.

The outcome also changes with tertiary amines. Tertiary aliphatic amines form water-soluble salts and N-nitrosoammonium compounds. Tertiary arylamines react by electrophilic aromatic substitution to make aromatic C-nitroso compounds.
