Enthalpy within the Cell

La energía interna, o E, es la energía contenida dentro de un sistema, como la energía contenida en los enlaces químicos y el movimiento aleatorio de sus partículas. Un sistema y su entorno pueden transferir energía entre ellos.
El cambio en la energía interna de un sistema, delta E, es igual a la suma de q, el calor total transferido al sistema, y w, el trabajo total realizado en el sistema.
En la mayoría de las reacciones bioquímicas, no se realiza ningún trabajo; por lo tanto, el cambio en la energía interna es equivalente a otra función termodinámica llamada entalpía.
El cambio en la entalpía de un sistema o ∆H va acompañado de un cambio igual y opuesto en la entalpía del entorno.
Un proceso exotérmico es cuando el sistema libera calor al entorno y está representado por una entalpía negativa. Un proceso endotérmico es cuando el sistema gana calor, representado por una entalpía positiva.
Las células vivas son sistemas abiertos que intercambian materia y energía con su entorno, a través de procesos exotérmicos y endotérmicos, siguiendo la primera ley de la termodinámica.

La entalpía (H) se utiliza para describir la termodinámica de procesos químicos y físicos. La entalpía se define como la suma de la energía interna de un sistema (U) y el producto matemático de su presión (P) y volumen (V):

H = U + PV

La entalpía también es una función de estado. Los valores de entalpía de sustancias específicas no se pueden medir directamente; sólo se pueden determinar los cambios de entalpía para procesos químicos o físicos. Para procesos que tienen lugar a presión constante (una condición común para muchos cambios químicos y físicos), el cambio de entalpía (ΔH) es:

ΔH = ΔU + PΔV

El calor que se desprende cuando se hace funcionar un mechero Bunsen es igual al cambio de entalpía de la reacción de combustión del metano que tiene lugar, ya que se produce a la presión esencialmente constante de la atmósfera. Un valor negativo de un cambio de entalpía, ΔH <0, indica una reacción exotérmica; un valor positivo, ΔH > 0, indica una reacción endotérmica.

El ΔH y el cambio de energía libre, llamado delta G (∆G), está relacionado mediante la siguiente ecuación, la cual se conoce como ecuación de Gibbs Helmholtz;

ΔG = ΔH − TΔS

Generalmente calculamos las condiciones estándar de pH, temperatura y presión a pH 7,0 en sistemas biológicos, 25 grados Celsius y 100 kilopascales (1 bar), respectivamente. Cellular enthalpy describes how heat and energy change during chemical and physical processes. Enthalpy is written as H and is defined as the sum of a system’s internal energy, U, and the product of pressure and volume, PV. It is a state function, which means its value depends on the state of the system, not the path taken.

Scientists cannot measure the enthalpy of a single substance directly. They can determine enthalpy changes, or ΔH, for a process instead. For reactions or changes that occur at constant pressure, which is common in many chemical and physical processes, ΔH equals ΔU + PΔV.

A simple example is the heat released when a Bunsen burner burns methane. That heat is equal to the enthalpy change of the combustion reaction because the reaction happens at essentially constant atmospheric pressure. A negative ΔH means the reaction is exothermic, while a positive ΔH means it is endothermic.

Enthalpy also connects to free energy through the Gibbs-Helmholtz equation, ΔG = ΔH − TΔS. In biology, standard conditions are usually pH 7.0, 25 degrees Celsius, and 100 kilopascals, or 1 bar. Cellular conditions often differ from these standards, so standard calculated ΔG values for biological reactions can change inside the cell.
