Functions of Life

Diferentes sistemas dentro del cuerpo coordinan sus diversas funciones, como la protección, el movimiento, el metabolismo y la reproducción, con el fin de apoyar el desarrollo y la supervivencia humana.
La piel, las uñas y el cabello protegen los órganos internos de los peligros externos. Además, el sistema nervioso detecta los cambios en el entorno circundante y responde rápidamente para evitar cualquier daño al cuerpo.
Los sistemas muscular y esquelético permiten que el cuerpo humano se mueva. El movimiento también ocurre dentro del cuerpo, por ejemplo, cuando el corazón late bombeando sangre a través del cuerpo.
El metabolismo incluye la descomposición de los alimentos a través del catabolismo en moléculas más simples como la glucosa y la generación de energía para llevar a cabo diferentes funciones fisiológicas. A través del anabolismo, se utilizan moléculas más simples para sintetizar moléculas complejas como las proteínas.

Metabolismo

El anabolismo es el proceso mediante el cual moléculas más pequeñas y simples se combinan para formar sustancias más grandes y complejas. El catabolismo es el proceso mediante el cual sustancias más grandes y complejas se descomponen en moléculas más pequeñas y simples. El catabolismo libera energía. Las moléculas complejas en los alimentos se descomponen en nutrientes para que el cuerpo pueda utilizarlos para ensamblar las estructuras y sustancias necesarias para la vida.

Tomados en conjunto, estos dos procesos se llaman metabolismo. El metabolismo es la suma de todas las reacciones anabólicas y catabólicas que tienen lugar en el cuerpo. Tanto el anabolismo como el catabolismo ocurren simultáneamente.

Movimiento

El movimiento humano incluye no solo acciones en las articulaciones del cuerpo, sino también el movimiento de órganos e incluso células individuales. Las células musculares se contraen y se relajan para mantener la postura del cuerpo. El cuerpo coordina la acción de grupos musculares enteros para permitir el movimiento del aire dentro y fuera de los pulmones, para impulsar la sangre por todo el cuerpo y para impulsar los alimentos consumidos a través del tracto digestivo.

Desarrollo, crecimiento y reproducción

El desarrollo incluye todos los cambios por los que pasa el cuerpo en la vida. El desarrollo también incluye los procesos de crecimiento y reparación, ambos involucran la diferenciación celular, es decir, la transición de una célula de un tipo a otro. El crecimiento es el aumento en el tamaño del cuerpo. Human life depends on metabolism, movement, development, growth, and reproduction. These functions help the body stay alive, maintain itself, and continue the species. Together, they show how the body uses energy and changes over time.

Metabolism is the body’s use of energy and food molecules. It helps the body make fuel for movement, support body functions, and build and maintain body structures. Metabolism includes two kinds of reactions: anabolism and catabolism.

Anabolism is the process of joining smaller, simpler molecules into larger, more complex substances. Catabolism is the process of breaking larger, more complex substances into smaller, simpler molecules. Catabolism releases energy. Food molecules are broken down into nutrients so the body can use them to build the structures and substances needed for life. Anabolism and catabolism happen at the same time, and together they make up metabolism.

Movement includes more than joint motion. It also includes the movement of organs and even individual cells. Muscle cells contract and relax to help maintain posture. Muscle groups also work together to move air in and out of the lungs, push blood through the body, and move food through the digestive tract.

Development is all the changes the body goes through during life. It includes growth and repair, and both depend on cell differentiation, which is the transition of a cell from one cell type to another. Growth is an increase in body size. In multicellular organisms like humans, growth happens by increasing the number of cells, increasing non-cellular material around cells such as mineral deposits in bone, and, within narrow limits, increasing the size of existing cells.

Reproduction is a basic function that allows a species to continue. It can happen through sexual or asexual means. In humans, reproduction is sexual. Male and female gametes fuse to form a zygote. The zygote then develops through a series of stages into an embryo, then a fetus, and finally a baby.
