El contenido de humedad del agregado es el exceso de agua presente en la superficie del agregado que existe en un estado saturado y superficialmente seco.
Se mide mediante una prueba de medidor de flotabilidad.
Para un agregado húmedo, la suma de su absorción de agua y contenido de humedad da su contenido total de agua.
Se determina utilizando un horno en el laboratorio o dispositivos eléctricos fijados en contenedores de almacenamiento de agregados.
Cuando una pila de arena se expone a la lluvia y al sol, puede retener humedad libre en la superficie de los granos de arena en el interior de la pila.
Esta humedad libre separa los granos de arena adyacentes, aumentando el volumen de una masa de arena determinada, lo que se conoce como aumento de volumen de arena. 
El aumento de volumen de arena contribuye a que una masa de arena menor ocupe un volumen definido.
Durante el procesamiento por pesaje para hormigón, se agrega arena adicional para compensar el aumento de volumen causado por la humedad, y la cantidad correspondiente de agua se resta de la mezcla para tener en cuenta la humedad ya presente en la arena.

Aggregate moisture affects concrete mixing by changing how much water must be added to the batch. Moisture content is the water coating the outside of aggregate that is in a saturated and surface-dry state. The total water in moist aggregate includes both moisture content and water absorption.

When aggregates sit in stockpiles or are exposed to rain, they can take in moisture. That extra water must be counted during concrete batching so the water-to-cement ratio stays correct. The moisture content of aggregate can be measured by the oven-drying method, which compares the water in the sample to its oven-dry mass.

Electrical moisture meters offer a faster option for checking aggregate water content. These devices detect changes in electrical resistance or capacitance caused by moisture. They can give instant or continuous readings, which makes them useful in automated concrete batching.

Moisture also changes the volume of sand through bulking. Bulking happens when water causes sand particles to repel each other and the sand takes up more space. Bulking does not change mass proportioning directly, but it can affect volume batching because the increased volume lowers the mass per unit volume in the mix.
