Acoustic Output Optimization

Acoustic Output Optimization is the systematic adjustment of an acoustic system’s operating conditions to produce a desired sound or ultrasound field safely and efficiently. In bioengineering, it involves measuring output and tuning variables such as frequency, intensity, pulse duration, and duty cycle so the delivered energy matches a defined target while limiting unwanted exposure, distortion, or heating. This approach supports the development and calibration of transducers, therapeutic ultrasound platforms, imaging systems, and other biomedical devices. By improving control over acoustic energy delivery, optimization can enhance measurement quality, treatment consistency, device performance, and reproducibility across research and clinical applications.

Habituation and prepulse inhibition of startle are operational measures of sensory gating. Sensory gating is disrupted in schizophrenia, and some other mental disorders and neurodegenerative diseases. We here describe a standard protocol to assess short-term and long-term habituation as well as prepulse inhibition of acoustic startle responses in rats and mice.

Cardiac Output II: Effect of Stroke Volume on Cardiac Output

2025

Cardiac output (CO), the amount of blood the heart pumps per minute, is a parameter in cardiovascular physiology determined by stroke volume and heart rate. Stroke volume, the amount of blood pushed from one of the ventricles per heartbeat, is influenced by preload, afterload, and contractility. Preload Preload refers to the initial elongation of the cardiac myocytes before contraction and is related to the volume of blood filling the heart at the end of diastole, or end-diastolic volume. The...

Output Efficiency: Achieving Output Efficiency

2025

Output efficiency happens when resources are used in a way that balances what people want with how goods are produced. This means the marginal rate of substitution (MRS) matches the marginal rate of transformation (MRT). When this balance is reached, the economy makes the most of its resources without waste.Take the example of bread and milk. If consumers are happy to trade 2 loaves of bread for 1 liter of milk, the MRS is 2. But if producers only need to give up 1 loaf of bread to produce 1...

Activating Molecules, Ions, and Solid Particles with Acoustic Cavitation

Acoustic cavitation in liquids submitted to power ultrasound creates transient extreme conditions inside the collapsing bubbles, which are the origin of unusual chemical reactivity and light emission, known as sonoluminescence. In the presence of noble gases, nonequilibrium plasma is formed. The "hot" particles and the photons generated by collapsing bubbles are able to excite species in solution.
