Brain Tumor Treatment

Brain tumor treatment is the coordinated use of medical and surgical interventions to control or eliminate abnormal growths in the brain while preserving healthy tissue and neurological function. Care may combine surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, targeted drugs, or immunotherapy, with choices guided by tumor type, location, molecular features, and patient health. Bioengineering contributes drug-delivery systems that improve transport across the blood-brain barrier, engineered biomaterials that support localized therapy, and laboratory models that predict treatment responses. These approaches can increase therapeutic precision, reduce systemic toxicity, and support personalized strategies for tumors that are difficult to reach or resistant to conventional treatment.

Source: Mess, G., et al. Sonodynamic Therapy for the Treatment of Glioblastoma Multiforme in a Mouse Model Using a Portable Benchtop Focused Ultrasound System. J. Vis. Exp. (2023)This video demonstrates a protocol for performing sonodynamic therapy on a brain tumor in a mouse model using magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS). A sonosensitizer precursor is administered prior to treatment, which accumulates in tumor cells and is activated by focused ultrasound to produce reactive...

Many types of human brain tumors are localized to specific regions within the brain and are difficult to grow in culture. This protocol addresses the role of tumor microenvironment and investigates new drug treatments by analyzing fluorescent primary brain tumor cells growing in an organotypic mouse brain slice.
