Frequency Locking Optical Whispering Evanescent Resonator

A frequency-locking optical whispering evanescent resonator is a photonic sensing system that confines light in a resonator while detecting changes near its surface, enabling sensitive measurement of biological and chemical interactions. Light circulates through whispering-gallery modes by total internal reflection, producing an evanescent field that extends into the surrounding medium; feedback continuously locks the laser frequency to a resonance, while binding events or refractive-index changes shift that resonance. In bioengineering, this approach supports label-free monitoring of biomolecular binding, cell-related interactions, and fluid composition, offering stable, real-time measurements for biosensor development, diagnostics, and quantitative studies of biological interfaces.

A high-sensitivity photonic micro sensor was developed for electric field detection. The sensor exploits the optical modes of a dielectric sphere. Changes in the external electric field perturb the sphere morphology leading to shifts in its optical modes. The electric field strength is measured by monitoring these optical shifts.
