Hybrid Optics Fabrication

Hybrid optics fabrication is the design and manufacture of optical components that combine different materials, structures, or optical functions in a single device. It works by integrating elements such as refractive lenses, diffractive surfaces, waveguides, and microfluidic features through processes including lithography, thin-film deposition, molding, or precision assembly, allowing light to be shaped, focused, or detected within a compact platform. In bioengineering, these devices support miniaturized microscopes, wearable and implantable sensors, lab-on-a-chip systems, and point-of-care diagnostics. Combining optical functions can reduce device size, improve sensitivity and alignment, and enable simultaneous manipulation and measurement of biological samples.

The scalability and resolution of conventional optical manipulation techniques are limited by diffraction. We circumvent the diffraction limit and describe a method of optically transporting nanoparticles across a chip using a gold surface patterned with a path of closely spaced C-shaped plasmonic resonators.
