India Ink Perfusion

India ink perfusion is a vascular-labeling technique that uses pigmented ink to reveal blood vessel networks, making tissue architecture easier to visualize and analyze. During the procedure, ink is introduced into the circulatory system and carried through patent vessels, filling their lumens and outlining branching patterns after the tissue is prepared for observation. In bioengineering, this method supports the study of vascular anatomy, tissue perfusion, and connections between vessels and engineered constructs. It can help assess vascular development, compare normal and abnormal networks, and evaluate how biomaterials or tissue-engineering strategies influence the formation and organization of functional vasculature.

Analysis of rodent cerebrovascular anatomy plays an important role in experimental stroke research. In this context, intravascular perfusion with colored latex has been considered as a standard tool for several years. However, this technique implies distinct technical limitations, which undermine its reproducibility. Here, we describe a simple method to visualize cerebral vessels in a reproducible manner. Injection of a mixture of two commercially available carbon black inks through the left...

Formulation of stable, functional inks is critical to expanding the applications of additive manufacturing. In turn, knowledge of the mechanisms of dispersant/particle bonding is required for effective ink formulation. Diffuse Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (DRIFTS) is presented as a simple, inexpensive way to gain insight into these mechanisms.

Antegrade Perfusion Model: An Ex Vivo Technique to Perfuse Isolated Mouse Heart

2025

This video describes an antegrade perfusion technique of an isolated mouse heart during which a perfusate is injected through the left ventricle, and eventually, it perfuses the entire myocardium. This method can be used to isolate cardiomyocytes from murine models and generate decellularized hearts for further downstream applications.
