Fly Morgue Disposal

Fly morgue disposal is the controlled collection and final handling of dead laboratory flies, especially Drosophila, after experiments or colony maintenance. The process separates spent flies from reusable cultures, contains carcasses and contaminated materials, and applies the laboratory’s approved waste or decontamination procedure to prevent escape, cross-contamination, and unintended release. Proper disposal supports accurate colony management, maintains clean work areas, and helps laboratories meet institutional biosafety and environmental requirements. It is particularly important when experiments involve genetic constructs, pathogens, chemical treatments, or other materials that require documented containment and waste handling.

Robert M. Rioux and Taslima A. Zaman, Pennsylvania State University, Pennsylvania, PA Users are responsible for the proper disposal of the waste generated during their work. Improper waste disposal may severely endanger public health and/or the environment. The handling of hazardous waste must be regulated from the moment of generation until its disposal at its offsite final destination facility. A waste management system must be devised before work begins on any laboratory activity. Users...

Disposing of accounts receivable refers to the process of removing unpaid invoices from a company’s books, either by selling them or writing them off. This is a critical part of managing working capital and ensuring accurate financial reporting. One common approach is factoring, where a company sells its receivables to a third party at a discount. The buyer, known as a factor, provides immediate cash but keeps a portion of the receivable as a fee. While this results in a financial loss, it...

Drosophila has emerged as a significant model system for dissecting the cellular and molecular underpinnings of behavioral responses to alcohol. Here we present a protocol for the collection of alcohol sensitivity data in a circadian context that can be easily applied to other experiments and is well-suited for undergraduate research.
