Plastoquinone

Plastoquinone is a lipid-soluble electron carrier embedded in the thylakoid membrane of chloroplasts, where it is essential for converting light energy into chemical energy during oxygenic photosynthesis. After photosystem II, plastoquinone accepts electrons and protons, transferring them through the plastoquinone pool to the cytochrome b6f complex; this movement helps establish a proton gradient that drives ATP synthesis, while electron flow ultimately supports NADPH production. Because its redox state reflects photosynthetic activity, plastoquinone is important for studying electron transport, regulation, and responses to light stress, and it provides a target for investigating how herbicides disrupt photosynthesis.
