Scalpel Blade Cutting

Scalpel blade cutting is a manual technique that uses a sharp surgical blade to separate biological tissues or materials with controlled precision, making it fundamental to dissection and specimen preparation. Its mechanism relies on concentrating applied force along a thin beveled edge; a steady, appropriately directed motion creates a cut while limiting unnecessary deformation of the surrounding sample. In biology, researchers and students use scalpel blade cutting to expose anatomical structures, divide tissues for examination, and prepare samples for downstream imaging or analysis. Skillful handling improves reproducibility and preserves structural context, supporting accurate observation in teaching laboratories and research workflows.

Source: Shreyas Narsipur, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC A propeller is a twisted airfoil, where the angle of the chord changes with respect to the location, along the radial station, as shown in Figure 1. Propellers are widely used in aircraft and watercraft propulsion systems thereby necessitating detailed characterizations of propellers to design high performance vehicles. Figure 1. Chord, thickness, and pitch at a radial station. One of...

Brick Cutting Techniques

2024

Brick-cutting techniques involve various tools and methods to shape bricks for construction. A mason's hammer with a chisel-pointed end is used for basic shaping through sharp, precise strikes. For more complex shapes requiring higher precision, a power saw with a water-cooled diamond blade is used. Cut bricks are categorized by size. Bricks cut to half their original length are called half-bats, while those cut to three-fourths their length are known as three-fourth bats. Special types of cut...
