Visual Motor Response

Visual motor response is the biological process of using visual information to guide coordinated movement, allowing an organism to interpret its surroundings and act appropriately. Light reaches the retina, where photoreceptors convert it into neural signals that travel through visual pathways to brain regions responsible for perception, motor planning, and muscle control. The nervous system compares visual input with the intended action and adjusts movement through feedback, such as changes in direction, force, or timing. Studying visual motor responses helps explain coordination, behavior, sensory processing, and the effects of neurological or developmental conditions.

Optokinetic response has been widely used to assess the visual functions of larval zebrafish. Nevertheless, the standard protocol for larval fish is not yet readily applicable in adults1-5. Here, we introduce how to measure the OKR of adult zebrafish using a new protocol which is established in our lab.

A Method for Evaluating Timeliness and Accuracy of Volitional Motor Responses to Vibrotactile Stimuli

This article describes a technique for applying vibrotactile stimuli to the thigh of a human participant, and measuring the accuracy and reaction time of the participant's volitional response for various combinations of stimulation location and frequency.

Methods to Explore the Influence of Top-down Visual Processes on Motor Behavior

It is unclear how top-down signals from the ventral visual stream affect movement. We developed a paradigm to test motor behavior towards a target on a 3D depth inversion illusion. Significant differences are reported in both deliberate, goal-directed movements and automatic actions under illusory and veridical viewing conditions.

This work details a standard immunohistochemistry method to visualize motor neuron projections of late stage-16 Drosophila melanogaster embryos. The filleted preparation of fixed embryos stained with FasII antibody provides a powerful tool to characterize the genes required for motor axon pathfinding and target recognition during neural development.

(2017)This video demonstrates the visualization of axonal projections in Drosophila embryos. Immunolabeling of motor neurons, precise dissection to expose neuronal structures, and differential interference contrast microscopy collectively reveal detailed neuronal architecture, emphasizing the axonal projection patterns.
