Zona Glomerulosa

The zona glomerulosa is the outermost layer of the adrenal cortex and a specialized endocrine tissue that helps maintain blood pressure and electrolyte balance. Its cells convert cholesterol into steroid hormones, chiefly aldosterone, whose production increases when angiotensin II signals activation of the renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system or when blood potassium levels rise. Aldosterone acts on the kidney’s distal nephron to promote sodium reabsorption and potassium secretion, thereby increasing water retention and supporting extracellular fluid volume. Studying the zona glomerulosa is important for understanding hypertension, electrolyte disorders, adrenal gland function, and diseases involving abnormal aldosterone production.

Glomerular Filtration

The filtration membrane in the renal system is a highly specialized structure essential for filtering blood. It consists of glomerular capillaries and podocytes, forming a selective barrier that permits the passage of water and small solutes while restricting most plasma proteins and blood cells. Components of the Filtration Membrane The filtration process involves three key layers: the glomerular endothelial cells, the basement membrane, and the podocyte-formed filtration slits. Glomerular...

We demonstrate a minimally invasive technique referred to as neonatal subventricular zone electroporation. The technique consists of injecting plasmid DNA into the lateral ventricles of neonatal pups and applying electrical current to deliver and genetically manipulate neural stem...

Zones of Protection

In power systems, the entire setup is divided into protective zones to isolate faults and protect the rest of the network. These zones include generators, transformers, buses, transmission lines, distribution lines, and motors. Each zone can be visualized as a separate room in a house, with each room protected by its own circuit breaker. Protective zones are defined by closed dashed lines, containing one or more components. A key characteristic of these zones is the strategic placement of...

Measurement of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is the gold standard for kidney function assessment. Here we describe a high-throughput method which allows the determination of GFR in conscious mice by using a single bolus injection, determination of fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-inulin in plasma and calculation of GFR by a two-phase exponential decay model.
