Blue Dye Mapping

Blue dye mapping is a surgical technique that uses a colored tracer to visualize lymphatic drainage and identify lymph nodes connected to a tumor. In cancer research and clinical investigation, the dye is injected near the tumor, travels through local lymphatic vessels, and concentrates in the first draining, or sentinel, lymph node. Researchers and surgeons can then locate and remove these stained nodes for pathological examination, helping assess whether cancer has begun to spread. The method supports studies of tumor dissemination, improves lymphatic anatomy mapping, and can guide decisions about staging, treatment, and the development of complementary imaging approaches.

Methylene blue dye injection into the renal pelvis facilitates the assessment of urinary tract junction obstruction defects during mouse embryonic urinary tract development. Here, a protocol for methylene blue dye injection into the renal pelvis is described.

Guide Wire Assisted Catheterization and Colored Dye Injection for Vascular Mapping of Monochorionic Twin Placentas

2011

Vascular mapping of monochorionic (MC) twin placentas after birth provides a means for detailed demonstration of vascular connections between the twins’ circulations. Imbalance of these connections is thought to play a pivotal role in the development of complications of MC twinning including twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome.

Gut Acidification Monitoring Assay: A Technique to Study the Acidification of the Intestinal Lumen in Drosophila using Bromophenol Blue Dye

2025

This video demonstrates an assay to monitor gut acidification in Drosophila flies. After the ingestion of food supplemented with a pH indicator dye, the acidification of the intestinal lumen results in a change in the color of the dye. Visual inspection of the digestive tract of the flies to examine the color change provides evidence of acidification.
