Tumor Prognosis

Tumor prognosis is the clinical assessment of a cancer’s likely course, including its growth, spread, response to therapy, recurrence risk, and patient survival, making it central to cancer care and research. Clinicians estimate prognosis by integrating tumor stage, size, grade, histologic features, molecular biomarkers, treatment response, and overall patient health with outcomes from comparable patient groups; statistical models and follow-up data refine these estimates over time. Prognostic information supports patient counseling, surveillance planning, risk stratification, and study design, while helping researchers evaluate therapies and identify biological features associated with aggressive or treatment-responsive disease.

Tumor Implantation and Injection of a Tumor Vaccine in a Mouse Model

2025

This video demonstrates a cell-based tumor vaccination assay. A mouse, intradermally injected with B16-F10 melanoma cells for tumor formation, is vaccinated with B16-F10 cells secreting Flt3L cytokine near the developed tumor. The secreted Flt3L from the vaccine promotes the maturation and proliferation of dendritic cells that then present tumor antigens to T cells in lymph nodes, triggering a targeted anti-tumor immune response.

This protocol describes a method for the detailed evaluation of leukocyte subsets within the tumor microenvironment in a mouse tumor model. Chemerin-expressing B16 melanoma cells were implanted subcutaneously into syngeneic mice. Cells from the tumor microenvironment were then stained and analyzed by flow cytometry, allowing for detailed leukocyte subset analyses.

Preparing Organoids from Tumors: A 3D In Vitro Tumor Model

Organoids derived from tumors are a type of 3D cell culture model that can maintain the pathological features and organ-specific cell lineage of tumors. In the example protocol, we will see scientists generate organoids from a prostate tumor from a genetically engineered mouse model.
