Vacuum Stabilized Window

A vacuum-stabilized window is an implanted imaging device that provides repeated optical access to living tissue while mechanically limiting movement, making it valuable for real-time cancer research. A transparent window is positioned over the tissue, and controlled negative pressure gently draws the tissue against its surface to reduce motion caused by breathing, heartbeat, or other physiological activity. This stabilization supports intravital microscopy of tumor growth, blood-vessel formation, immune-cell interactions, and responses to treatment over time. By enabling longitudinal observation in the same subject, the method links cellular behavior with tumor progression and therapeutic outcome while reducing variability between experimental measurements.

In Situ Measurement of Vacuum Window Birefringence using 25Mg+ Fluorescence

Presented here is a method to measure the birefringence of vacuum windows by maximizing the fluorescence counts emitted by Doppler cooled 25Mg+ ions in an ion trap. The birefringence of vacuum windows will change the polarization states of the laser, which can be compensated by changing the azimuthal angles of external wave plates.
