Ammonium Detection

Ammonium detection is the qualitative or quantitative measurement of ammonium ions (NH4+) in a sample, an important task in analytical chemistry and environmental monitoring. In aqueous solution, ammonium exists in equilibrium with ammonia (NH3); methods exploit this relationship through color-forming reactions, ion-selective electrodes, or separation techniques such as ion chromatography. Under alkaline conditions, the equilibrium shifts toward ammonia, enabling sensitive measurement of the released species, while electrochemical sensors respond directly to ion activity. These approaches support analysis of drinking water, wastewater, soil, fertilizers, and biological samples, helping assess nutrient levels, pollution, treatment performance, and chemical composition.

Begin with a wetland soil-derived enrichment culture containing bacterial communities. The culture exhibits Feammox activity, ammonium oxidation coupled to ferric iron reduction, indicating the enrichment of a bacterium capable of this metabolic process.Serially dilute the culture using media.Streak the diluted samples onto test agar plates supplemented with ferric iron and ammonium.Use control plates that lack either ferric iron or ammonium, or contain ferric iron with organic carbon instead of...

Construction and Systematical Symmetric Studies of a Series of Supramolecular Clusters with Binary or Ternary Ammonium Triphenylacetates

2016

This article describes construction of a series of hydrogen-bonding supramolecular clusters in crystals using primary ammonium triphenylacetates, which are recrystallized from non-polar solvents. This selective construction of the supramolecular clusters leads to effective systematical symmetric studies about a correlation between the supramolecular clusters and their components.
