Carbon Carbon Bond Formation

Carbon-carbon bond formation is the set of chemical reactions that join carbon atoms, creating the skeletons of organic molecules and enabling the construction of increasingly complex structures. It occurs when reactive carbon species and electrophilic carbon centers combine through processes such as nucleophilic substitution, addition, condensation, or transition-metal-catalyzed cross-coupling. Reaction conditions, catalysts, leaving groups, and the electronic and steric properties of substrates determine bond-forming efficiency and selectivity. In chemistry, these transformations support the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, polymers, natural products, and functional materials, while providing strategic tools for modifying molecular architecture and studying structure-property relationships.

The Carbon Cycle

2019

Carbon is the basis of all organic matter on Earth, and is recycled through the ecosystem in two primary processes: one in which carbon is exchanged among living organisms, and one in which carbon is cycled over long periods of time through fossilized organic remains, weathering of rocks, and volcanic activity. Human activities, including increased agricultural practices and the burning of fossil fuels, has greatly affected the balance of the natural carbon cycle. Biological Carbon Cycle All...

Detailed and generalized protocols are presented for the synthesis and subsequent purification of four palladium N-heterocyclic carbene complexes from benzimidazolium salts. The complexes were tested for catalytic activity in arylation and Suzuki-Miyaura reactions. For each reaction investigated, at least one of the four complexes successfully catalyzed the reaction.

A protocol for the parallel production of precipitated calcium carbonate and zeolitic material from blast furnace slag via mineral carbonation and alkaline hydrothermal conversion, respectively, is presented. The performance of the zeolitic material towards nickel adsorption is tested.

Carbonation Shrinkage

2024

Atmospheric CO2 penetrates the concrete's pores and, in the presence of moisture, forms carbonic acid, which then reacts with calcium hydroxide in the hydrated cement, forming calcium carbonate. This process reduces the concrete's volume and is termed carbonation shrinkage. The concrete's permeability is slightly reduced as calcium carbonate produced during the reaction fills its pores. Furthermore, its strength is slightly enhanced as the water released during the reaction facilitates the...
