Ion Suppressor

An ion suppressor is a device used in ion chromatography to reduce the background conductivity of the mobile phase and improve detection of dissolved ions. It uses ion-exchange membranes or resins to replace eluent ions with ions that produce weakly conductive species, while converting separated analytes into forms that remain readily detectable. In anion chromatography, for example, hydronium ions can convert carbonate or hydroxide eluent components into weakly conductive carbonic acid or water, increasing the contrast between analyte and background signals. Suppression therefore improves sensitivity, selectivity, and quantification in chemical, environmental, pharmaceutical, and biological analyses.

Common Ion Effect

2020

Compared with pure water, the solubility of an ionic compound is less in aqueous solutions containing a common ion (one also produced by dissolution of the ionic compound). This is an example of a phenomenon known as the common ion effect, which is a consequence of the law of mass action that may be explained using Le Châtelier’s principle. Consider the dissolution of silver iodide: This solubility equilibrium may be shifted left by the addition of either silver(I) or iodide ions, resulting in...

Predicting Precipitation The equation that describes the equilibrium between solid calcium carbonate and its solvated ions is: It is important to realize that this equilibrium is established in any aqueous solution containing Ca2+ and CO32– ions, not just in a solution formed by saturating water with calcium carbonate. Consider, for example, mixing aqueous solutions of the soluble compounds sodium carbonate and calcium nitrate. If the concentrations of calcium and carbonate ions in the mixture...

Ion Channels

2019

The movement of ions like sodium, potassium, and calcium into and out of the cell is essential to maintain the electrochemical gradient in living cells. The ion channels—a class of membrane transport proteins—help maintain this ionic gradient for the smooth functioning of physiological activities such as maintaining cell size and volume, conducting nerve impulses, and gas and nutrient exchange. Ion channels are specialized integral membrane proteins on the plasma membrane that allow specific...

Loss of Tumor Suppressor Gene Functions

2023

Tumor suppressor genes are normal genes that can slow down cell division, repair DNA mistakes, or program the cells for apoptosis in case of irreparable damage. Hence, they play an essential role in preventing the proliferation of damaged cells. When the tumor suppressor genes develop mutations or are lost, cells start growing out of control, leading to cancer. However, a single functional copy of the tumor suppressor gene is enough for the cells to maintain their normal functions and cell...
