Laboratory Procedure

A laboratory procedure is a documented, step-by-step method for carrying out an experiment or analysis under controlled conditions, making chemical work reproducible and safe. In chemistry, it specifies how to prepare materials, handle equipment, control conditions such as temperature or reaction time, and record observations or measurements so that each operation follows a defined sequence. Laboratory procedures support synthesis, separation, identification, and quantitative analysis while reducing experimental error and exposure to hazards. Clear procedures also help students and researchers compare results, troubleshoot unexpected outcomes, and reproduce findings across laboratories.

We present three protocols that assess different forms of impulsivity in rats and other small mammals. Intertemporal choice procedures evaluate the tendency to discount the value of delayed outcomes. Differential reinforcement of low rates and feature-negative discrimination evaluate response inhibition capacity with and without punishment for inappropriate responses, respectively.

Although researchers are generally knowledgeable about procedures and safety precautions required for biosafety level 1 or 2 (BSL-1/2) experiments, they may not be familiar with experimental procedures in BSL-4 suit laboratories. This article provides a detailed visual demonstration of BSL-4 suit laboratory systems check, laboratory entry, movement, and exit procedures.

2024

Training protocols involving positive reinforcement for routine husbandry procedures in rabbits were developed and proved to be successful, as the rabbits reliably showed the trained behaviors at the weekly general examination. Picking the rabbits up with the transport box was less aversive than the conventional handling technique.
