Locant Value

Locant value is a numerical designation that identifies the position of a substituent, functional group, multiple bond, or other structural feature within a chemical structure or systematic name. In organic nomenclature, locants arise by numbering the parent chain or ring according to established IUPAC rules, usually selecting the direction that gives the relevant features the lowest possible set of numbers and resolving ties by priority rules. Correct locant values make chemical names unambiguous, allowing researchers and students to distinguish constitutional isomers, assign systematic names, interpret molecular structures, and communicate compounds consistently across synthetic chemistry, databases, and chemical literature.
