Soluble Lead Flow Battery

Soluble lead flow batteries are rechargeable electrochemical energy-storage systems that use a circulating, lead-based electrolyte to store electricity, making them a specialized topic in electrochemistry and grid-scale storage. During charging, dissolved lead ions in an aqueous methanesulfonic acid solution are reduced and deposited as metallic lead at the negative electrode, while oxidation forms lead dioxide at the positive electrode; reversing the current dissolves these materials and releases electrical energy. Their flowing electrolyte enables separate control of energy capacity and power, while the water-based chemistry supports stationary applications such as renewable-energy integration, load balancing, and large-scale backup storage.

2026

Here, we present a simple and low-cost glycerol displacement method based on Archimedes' principle for measuring lead-acid battery electrode porosities. The method demonstrates good reproducibility and is safer than traditional techniques, requiring low-hazard chemicals and equipment. Combining the technique with microstructural analysis by X-ray diffraction provides information on battery electrode properties and degradation.

A battery is a galvanic cell that is used as a source of electrical power for specific applications. Modern batteries exist in a multitude of forms to accommodate various applications, from tiny button batteries such as those that power wristwatches to the very large batteries used to supply backup energy to municipal power grids. Some batteries are designed for single-use applications and cannot be recharged (primary cells), while others are based on conveniently reversible cell reactions that...

Factors Affecting Solubility

Compared with pure water, the solubility of an ionic compound is less in aqueous solutions containing a common ion (one also produced by dissolution of the ionic compound). This is an example of a phenomenon known as the common ion effect, which is a consequence of the law of mass action that may be explained using Le Chȃtelier’s principle. Consider the dissolution of silver iodide: This solubility equilibrium may be shifted left by the addition of either silver or iodide ions, resulting in...
