Unit Operations Programming

Unit operations programming is the use of computational methods to model, calculate, and control individual steps in a chemical process, such as separation, mixing, heating, or reaction. Programs translate mass and energy balances, thermodynamic relationships, and transport principles into algorithms that predict how process variables change under specified conditions. In chemistry, these models help analyze material flows, estimate equipment performance, and evaluate the effects of temperature, pressure, composition, and operating rates. Unit operations programming supports process design, optimization, troubleshooting, and laboratory-to-industrial scale-up while providing a practical framework for connecting chemical theory with reproducible engineering calculations.

In this protocol we describe a method of operant learning using sensory stimuli as a reinforcer in the mouse. It requires no prior training or food restriction, and it allows the study of motivated behavior without the use of a pharmacological or natural reinforcer such as food.

Measurement: Standard Units

2020

Every measurement provides three kinds of information: the size or magnitude of the measurement (a number), a standard of comparison for the measurement (a unit), and an indication of the uncertainty of the measurement. While the number and unit are explicitly represented when a quantity is written, the uncertainty is an aspect of the errors in the measurement results. The number in the measurement can be represented in different ways, including decimal form and scientific notation, which is...

Measurement: Derived Units

The International System of Units or SI system, by international agreement, has fixed measurement units for seven fundamental properties: length, mass, time, temperature, electric current, amount of substance, and luminosity. These are called the SI base units. Units of measurement derived from the mathematical combination of SI base units are called SI-derived units. For example, the ratio of the SI unit for distance (meter; m) and the SI unit for time (second; s) gives the SI-derived unit...

Programmed Electrical Stimulation in Mice

Programmed electrical stimulation provides the ability to determine conduction properties of the heart, and the possibility to induce and terminate cardiac arrhythmias using various pacing protocols. Using a transvenous catheter, intracardiac electrogram recordings can be obtained in mice following programmed electrical stimulation protocols to identify arrhythmogenic substrates.

A Concoction Pipeline for Generating Molecular Operational Taxonomic Units (MOTUs) Among Riparian and Aquatic Beetles

2025

The protocol presented here aims to guide the users on the computer-based processing of cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene sequences generated from beetles, such that the species clustering hypothesis called molecular operational taxonomic units (MOTUs) can be generated from DNA.
