Hematuria

Hematuria is the presence of red blood cells in the urine and an important clinical finding that can indicate disease anywhere along the urinary tract. It may be gross, producing visibly pink, red, or brown urine, or microscopic, detected through urinalysis and confirmed by urine microscopy; bleeding can arise from glomerular injury, infection, stones, trauma, or malignancy. Clinical evaluation considers symptoms, medications, renal function, and risk factors, then may use urine culture, imaging, or cystoscopy to identify the source. Accurate assessment helps distinguish transient findings from conditions requiring treatment and supports early detection of kidney and urinary tract disease.
