Cell Migration Studies

Cell Migration Studies investigate how cells move through tissues or across surfaces, a fundamental process that shapes organisms and influences healing, immunity, and disease. In developmental biology, researchers track migration as cells sense chemical and physical cues, reorganize the actin cytoskeleton, form adhesive contacts, and generate traction to move toward defined destinations. Imaging, time-lapse microscopy, and controlled culture or tissue models can reveal migration speed, directionality, and interactions with neighboring cells. These measurements help explain embryonic patterning, tissue formation, and the cellular basis of developmental disorders, while providing principles for studying regeneration and invasive behavior.

An Introduction to Cell Motility and Migration

2023

Cell motility and migration play important roles in both normal biology and in disease. On one hand, migration allows cells to generate complex tissues and organs during development, but on the other hand, the same mechanisms are used by tumor cells to move and spread in a process known as cancer metastasis. One of the primary cellular machineries that make cell movement possible is an intracellular network of myosin and actin molecules, together known as “actomyosin”, which creates a...

Concentric Gel System to Study the Biophysical Role of Matrix Microenvironment on 3D Cell Migration

The mechanical properties and microstructure of the extracellular matrix strongly affect 3D migration of cells. An in vitro method to study the spatiotemporal cell migration behavior in biophysically variable environments, at both population and individual cell levels, is described.

Competitive homing experiments allow to directly assessing the migratory properties of two different cell populations in a single mouse. Here we illustrate this procedure by comparing the migration of ex vivo-generated gut-tropic versus non-gut tropic T cells.

Brain Tumor Stem Cell (BTSC) Migration Assay for Drug Treatment Studies: An In Vitro Live-cell Imaging Technique to Analyze the Effect of Drug Treatment on Migration of BTSCs
