Additive Manufacturing

Additive manufacturing is a group of processes that creates physical objects by building material layer by layer from a digital design, reducing the need for conventional cutting, molding, or tooling. Depending on the process, a machine deposits, selectively fuses, or cures polymers, metals, or other materials according to computer-controlled geometry, with each layer bonding to the one below it. In engineering, this approach supports rapid prototyping, lightweight lattice structures, customized components, and complex internal channels that can be difficult to produce conventionally. It can shorten development cycles and reduce material waste, while advances in materials, process control, and quality assurance expand its use in production.

A method called negative additive manufacturing is used to produce near fully dense complex shaped boron carbide parts of various length scales. This technique is possible via the formulation of a novel suspension involving resorcinol-formaldehyde as a unique gelling agent that leaves behind a homogenous carbon sintering aid after pyrolysis.

Additively manufactured polymers have been widely used for producing elastic metamaterials. The viscoelastic behavior of these polymers at ultrasonic frequencies remains, however, poorly studied. This study reports a protocol to estimate the viscoelastic properties of 3D-printed polymers and show how to use them to analyze the metamaterial dynamics.
