Animal Vegetable Fats

Animal and vegetable fats are lipid-based materials obtained from animal tissues and plant sources, valued for their energy content, chemical reactivity, and tunable physical properties. Their behavior depends on fatty-acid composition, including the degree of saturation, which influences melting point, viscosity, oxidation stability, and phase transitions; chemical processing can further modify these characteristics through reactions such as hydrogenation or esterification. In engineering, these fats support the development of biofuels, lubricants, soaps, coatings, and other biobased materials. Understanding their composition and processing helps engineers improve performance, stability, sustainability, and the use of renewable feedstocks in industrial applications.

Source: Wunderlin, T., et al. Physical Isolation of Endospores from Environmental Samples by Targeted Lysis of Vegetative Cells. J. Vis. Exp. (2016)This video demonstrates a method to isolate endospores from an environmental sample containing both vegetative cells and various bacteria. The procedure involves filtration, mechanical disruption, and selective chemical treatment to weaken and lyse vegetative cells while preserving endospores. The final step isolates the resilient endospores through...

We describe an ovarian fad pad transplantation assay suitable for studies of normal and transformed epithelia of the female reproductive tract. The mouse fat pad allows transplantation of large tissue fragments, is easily accessible for surgery and imaging, and provides the most favorable native environment for tissues of Müllerian origin.
