Learning Engagement Assessment

Learning engagement assessment is the systematic evaluation of how actively and meaningfully learners participate in an educational experience, helping educators understand whether instruction supports progress. It combines evidence such as participation, attention, interaction, persistence, and responses to learning activities, which can be gathered through observations, questionnaires, performance data, or digital learning records. In engineering education, these assessments help instructors identify barriers to involvement, evaluate laboratory and design-based instruction, and adapt teaching to strengthen collaboration, problem-solving, and conceptual understanding. Consistent assessment also provides evidence for improving course design and connecting learner behavior with academic outcomes.

2021

We propose a methodology that enables measuring engagement of spectators in a social digital game combining physiological and self-reported data. As this digital game involves a group of freely moving people, the experience is filmed using a synchronizing technique that links physiological data with events in the game.
