Ligament Reconstruction

Ligament reconstruction is a surgical and bioengineering approach that restores stability to a joint by replacing a torn or nonfunctional ligament with a biological graft or engineered substitute. The replacement is positioned along the ligament’s anatomical path and secured to bone, allowing mechanical fixation while host tissue gradually integrates and remodels the graft. Engineering research evaluates scaffold materials, graft strength, fixation methods, and biocompatibility to improve load transfer and healing. These advances support treatment of sports injuries and joint instability while informing the development of tissue-engineered ligaments, patient-specific implants, and rehabilitation strategies that promote durable functional recovery.

Pelvic organ prolapse affects millions of women worldwide and yet some common surgical interventions have failure rates as high as 40%. The lack of standard animal models to investigate this condition impedes progress. We propose the following protocol as a model for uterosacral ligament suspension and in vivo tensile testing.
