Operator Mental Burden

Operator mental burden is the cognitive and emotional demand placed on a person while monitoring systems, interpreting information, making decisions, and controlling equipment. In engineering contexts, it arises when task complexity, time pressure, alarms, interruptions, or poorly organized interfaces exceed available attention and working-memory capacity, increasing the effort required to maintain accurate performance. Assessing this burden helps engineers identify workload-related errors, fatigue, and loss of situational awareness, while informing control-room design, automation strategies, training, and human-machine interfaces. Reducing unnecessary mental demands can improve safety, reliability, decision quality, and operator resilience in complex technical systems.

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Visual mental imagery refers to the ability to conjure images in one’s mind’s eye. This allows people to process visual material above and beyond the constraints of a current point-of-view; for example, a person could imagine, using their mind’s eye, how something might look in a different color, or what it would look like if it were made from a different material or rotated and seen from a different perspective. Mental imagery...

Source: Carmen Black, Matthew Goldenberg, and Jaideep Talwalkar; Yale School of Medicine The mental status exam is a clinical evaluation of emotional, perceptual, and cognitive functioning that spans both the fields of psychiatry and neurology. Developing skill in the psychiatric portions of the examination are important to describe salient aspects of the patient's mental state that may be observed during routine history and/or physical exam. Proficiency in the cognitive portions of this...

Source: Madenspacher, J. H. and Fessler, M. B. A Non-invasive and Technically Non-intensive Method for Induction and Phenotyping of Experimental Bacterial Pneumonia in Mice. J. Vis. Exp. (2016)This video demonstrates the process of quantifying bacterial load in the spleen of an infected mouse to assess the severity of infection. The homogenized spleen is serially diluted and plated to determine total bacterial burden. The resulting data provide insights into host-pathogen interactions within...

Stress and Mental Health

2025

Chronic stress profoundly affects mental health, significantly influencing mood, behavior, and overall quality of life. Research closely links chronic stress with mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders. Ongoing exposure to stress can lead to physiological and psychological changes, initiating a cycle of emotional distress and maladaptive coping mechanisms. Individuals with depression often experience challenges in both their personal and professional...

Measurement of the In Vivo Burden of Bacteria Expressing Luciferase in an Insect Larva

2025

This video showcases the in vivo bacterial burden measurement using Bacillus Calmette-Guérin, BCG, lux-infected insect larvae. The process involves larval homogenization, treatment with a luciferase substrate, and bioluminescence measurement to determine relative light units that correlate with bacterial burden.
