Surface Chemistry

Surface chemistry is the study of chemical phenomena at interfaces, where solids, liquids, and gases meet, and it matters because these thin boundary regions often control material performance. At an interface, molecules can adsorb, rearrange, exchange charge, and undergo reactions, changing surface energy, wettability, adhesion, friction, and corrosion behavior. In engineering, these principles guide the design of catalysts, protective coatings, electronic and biomedical materials, and separation membranes. Measuring contact angles, adsorption isotherms, and reaction rates helps researchers connect surface structure with function, improve durability and manufacturing, and develop interfaces with tailored chemical and mechanical properties.

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Neal Abrams — SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry Transition metals are found everywhere from vitamin supplements to electroplating baths. Transition metals also make up the pigments in many paints and compose all minerals. Typically, transition metals are found in the cationic form since they readily oxidize, or lose electrons, and are surrounded by electron donors called ligands. These ligands do not form ionic or covalent bonds with the metal center,...

2019

A new group IV metal catalyst for imine metathesis is prepared by grafting amine metal complex onto dehydroxylated silica. Surface metal fragments are characterized using FT-IR, elemental microanalysis, and solid-state NMR spectroscopy. Further dynamic nuclear polarization surface enhanced NMR spectroscopy experiments complement the determination of the coordination sphere.

Biomaterials doped with Bone Morphogenetic Protein 2 (BMP2) have been used as a new therapeutic strategy to heal non-union bone fractures. To overcome side effects resulting from an uncontrollable release of the factor, we propose a new strategy to site-directly immobilize the factor, thus creating materials with improved osteogenic capabilities.
