Vacuum Heat Treatment

Vacuum heat treatment is a materials-processing method that heats metals or alloys under reduced pressure to modify their microstructure and improve performance. In a vacuum furnace, controlled heating and cooling occur with minimal oxygen, limiting oxidation, scaling, and surface contamination while allowing processes such as hardening, tempering, annealing, and stress relieving. The treatment can improve hardness, strength, wear resistance, dimensional stability, and surface quality, depending on the material and thermal cycle. In engineering, vacuum heat treatment is used for precision components, tool steels, aerospace parts, and other applications where reliable properties, clean surfaces, and tight dimensional control are essential.

Source: Schregel, K., et al. Optimized Management of Endovascular Treatment for Acute Ischemic Stroke. J. Vis. Exp. (2018).This video demonstrates the endovascular treatment of acute ischemic stroke using the stent retriever-assisted vacuum-locked extraction technique. A guiding sheath is introduced through the femoral artery to reach the clot. A catheter with a stent retriever secures and extracts the clot. Vascular imaging is done to confirm successful reperfusion.

Source: Robert M. Rioux, Ajay Sathe & Zhifeng Chen, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Vacuum is required for a number of laboratory procedures. This is most routinely achieved in the laboratory by the use of vacuum pumps. In addition to working at low pressures, vacuum pumps can also be used to enable rapid changing of the atmospheres in a reactor or flask by evacuation and backfilling.
