Coastal Wetland Mapping

Coastal wetland mapping is the process of identifying, classifying, and delineating tidal wetlands and their boundaries across shorelines, providing spatial information for environmental management. It combines satellite or aerial imagery with geographic information systems, terrain and tidal-elevation data, and field observations to distinguish wetland vegetation, open water, mudflats, and adjacent uplands; repeated images can also reveal changes over time. These maps support habitat conservation, restoration planning, flood-risk assessment, and monitoring of shoreline change, sea-level impacts, and carbon-rich wetland ecosystems. Consistent mapping methods also help researchers compare conditions across regions and evaluate how coastal wetlands respond to disturbance and climate change.
