Larval Fish Behavior

Larval fish behavior is the set of movements, sensory responses, and interactions that shape how young fish function and survive during early development. As sensory systems mature, larvae respond to environmental cues such as light, water movement, chemical signals, prey, and predators, adjusting swimming, vertical position, feeding, and dispersal. Studying these behaviors helps researchers understand how environmental conditions influence recruitment, population distribution, and survival in aquatic ecosystems. It also supports assessments of habitat quality, climate-related change, fisheries productivity, and the ecological effects of pollution or altered ocean conditions.

A series of basic methods to enable the study of the reproductive ecology of fish kept in aquaria are described. These are useful protocols for collecting fish using SCUBA, transporting live fish, and observing the reproductive behavior of wild-caught fish kept in aquaria.

Using Linear Agarose Channels to Study Drosophila Larval Crawling Behavior

Here, we present a protocol to examine larval zebrafish and fathead minnow locomotor activities and photomotor responses (PMR) using an automated tracking software. When incorporated in common toxicology bioassays, analyses of these behaviors provide a diagnostic tool to examine chemical bioactivity. This protocol is described using caffeine, a model neurostimulant.
