Drug Resistance Testing

Drug resistance testing is a set of laboratory methods used to determine whether a microorganism can withstand antimicrobial drugs, helping guide effective treatment of infectious disease. Testing measures susceptibility by exposing cultured pathogens to selected drug concentrations or by identifying genetic changes associated with resistance through molecular assays. In immunology and infection research, these results support individualized therapy, surveillance of emerging resistance, and evaluation of how microbial evolution influences disease control. By linking resistance profiles with immune status, pathogen biology, and treatment outcomes, researchers and clinicians can refine antimicrobial strategies and help limit the spread of resistant infections.

Drug resistance to targeted therapeutics is widespread and the need to identify mechanisms of resistance--prior to or following clinical onset--is critical for guiding alternative clinical management strategies. Here, we present a protocol to couple derivation of drug-resistant lines in vitro with sequencing to expedite discovery of these mechanisms.

An amplification microarray combines asymmetric PCR amplification and microarray hybridization into a single chamber, which significantly streamlines microarray workflow for the end user. Simplifying microarray workflow is a necessary first step for creating microarray-based diagnostics that can be routinely used in lower-resource environments.
