Factor Latex Reagents

Factor Latex Reagents are immunodiagnostic reagents used to detect rheumatoid factor, an autoantibody associated with rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory conditions. In a latex agglutination assay, microscopic polymer particles coated with human immunoglobulin G bind rheumatoid factor in a patient sample, causing visible particle clumping or a measurable increase in turbidity. These reagents support rapid qualitative screening and quantitative assessment of rheumatoid factor in serum or plasma, helping researchers and clinical laboratories investigate autoimmune responses, distinguish disease-associated antibody patterns, and monitor diagnostic markers alongside other immunological findings. Their standardized format also enables practical testing across routine laboratory workflows.

Latex agglutination testing is a simple, rapid and inexpensive method for serotyping Streptococcus pneumoniae, and has also been widely applied in diagnostic microbiology. This manuscript describes the in-house production of latex agglutination reagents, quality control procedures and the application of this technique to pneumococcal serotyping.

Preparing Anhydrous Reagents and Equipment

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Dana Lashley - College of William and Mary Demonstrated by: Timothy Beck and Lucas Arney Many reactions in organic chemistry are moisture-sensitive and must be carried out under careful exclusion of water. In these cases the reagents have a high affinity to react with water from the atmosphere and if left exposed the desired reaction will not take place or give poor yields, because the reactants are chemically altered. In order to prevent undesired reactions with H2O...

EDTA: Auxiliary Complexing Reagents

2024

EDTA titrations are usually carried out in highly basic conditions, where the fully deprotonated form of EDTA, Y4−, actively complexes with the free metal ions in the solution. Several metal ions precipitate as hydrous oxide (hydroxides, oxides, or oxyhydroxides) under these conditions, lowering the concentration of free metal ions in the solution. For this reason, auxiliary complexing agents or ligands such as ammonia, tartrate, citrate, or triethanolamine are used in EDTA titrations to...

Acid Halides to Ketones: Gilman Reagent

2025

Lithium dialkyl cuprate, also known as Gilman reagents, selectively reduces acid halides to ketones. The acid chloride is treated with Gilman reagent at −78 °C in the presence of ether solution to produce a ketone in good yield. As shown below, the mechanism proceeds in two steps. First, one of the alkyl groups of the reagent acts as a nucleophile and attacks the acyl carbon of the acid chloride to form a tetrahedral intermediate. This is followed by the reformation of the carbon–oxygen double...
