Physical Fitness Assessment

Physical fitness assessment is the systematic measurement of physical capacities and health-related fitness, providing an objective picture of how the body performs under defined conditions. It typically combines standardized tests of cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and body composition, using measurements such as heart rate, oxygen uptake, force, range of motion, and anthropometric data. In immunology and infection research, these assessments help characterize host status, examine how illness or inflammation affects physiological performance, and track recovery over time, supporting comparisons across participants and informing safe, individualized activity or rehabilitation plans.

Chronic infection with soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) causes malabsorption, stunting, and wasting in the growing child. Hence, it is plausible that these infections also reduce the physical fitness of children. Here, we visualize two techniques for the diagnosis of STHs and the 20-meter shuttle run test for assessing children's physical fitness.

2025

Here, we present a protocol to assess physical activity intensity levels measured with indirect calorimetry and two accelerometers (on the right wrist and waist) during an incremental walking-jogging test (from 0.84 to 2.37 m/s) on an oval track. The results show differences among the physical intensity assessed through those methods.

2024

Physical assessment of the respiratory tract is critical in identifying potential health issues. One key component of this assessment is palpation, a technique healthcare providers use to assess the body for abnormalities. This content explores the method of palpation in evaluating the respiratory tract, focusing on thoracic palpation and tactile fremitus. Thoracic Palpation Thoracic palpation detects tenderness, masses, lesions, respiratory excursions, and vocal fremitus. The nurse assesses...
