18f-av-1451

18F-AV-1451, also known as flortaucipir, is a fluorine-18-labeled positron emission tomography (PET) radiotracer developed to visualize aggregated tau protein in the living brain, a hallmark of several neurodegenerative disorders. After intravenous administration, the tracer crosses the blood-brain barrier and binds preferentially to paired helical filament tau within neurofibrillary tangles; PET imaging then maps its regional retention and distribution. In medicine, 18F-AV-1451 supports research on Alzheimer’s disease by assessing tau burden, disease progression, and relationships between pathology and cognitive decline. It also helps evaluate participants in clinical trials, although interpretation requires attention to off-target binding and disease-specific differences in tracer uptake.

We describe a microsurgical approach for the generation of an arteriovenous (AV) loop as a model for analyzing vascularization in vivo in an isolated and well-characterized environment. This model is not only useful for the investigation of angiogenesis, but is also optimally suited for engineering axially vascularized and transplantable tissues.
