Acetabular Wall Reconstruction

Acetabular wall reconstruction is a surgical method for restoring the bony socket of the hip when disease, trauma, or revision surgery has caused bone loss, helping re-establish joint stability and load transfer. During the procedure, the defect is prepared and reconstructed with a shaped bone graft, porous metal augment, or other implant, which is fixed to remaining host bone and incorporated into a revision acetabular component. The technique is used particularly in complex total hip arthroplasty revisions and acetabular fractures, where restoration of the hip center and durable implant fixation can support function, biological healing, and long-term reconstruction.

A technique called Comprehensive Microarray Polymer Profiling (CoMPP) for the characterisation of plant cell wall glycans is described. This method combines the specificity of monoclonal antibodies directed to defined glycan-epitopes with a miniature microarray analytical platform allowing screening of glycan occurrence in a broad range of biological contexts.

Bacterial Cell Wall

2025

The bacterial cell wall is an essential structural component that encases the plasma membrane, preserving cellular integrity, determining shape, and protecting against osmotic stress. This rigid yet flexible structure primarily comprises peptidoglycan, a polymer that forms a mesh-like matrix conferring mechanical strength and flexibility.Peptidoglycan Composition and StructurePeptidoglycan, the core of the bacterial cell wall, comprises alternating units of N-acetylglucosamine (NAG) and...

Composite Masonry Walls

2024

Composite masonry walls combine multiple wythes of the same or different masonry materials to create a unified structure. These walls feature wythes that are bonded together either through mortar-filled collar joints, grouted spaces, or more commonly, with rigid metal ties and reinforcements, with the use of masonry header units being rare. Metal ties are preferred because they effectively minimize water penetration, as these walls primarily absorb moisture and then release it into the...
