Acinar Atrophy

Acinar atrophy is the shrinkage and loss of acinar cells, the secretory units that produce digestive enzymes in exocrine glands such as the pancreas, and it can impair organ function. In the pancreas, persistent inflammation, duct obstruction, or tissue injury may damage acinar cells, leading to their gradual disappearance and replacement by fibrotic tissue; reduced enzyme production can cause pancreatic exocrine insufficiency. Recognizing acinar atrophy in histological specimens or imaging supports evaluation of chronic pancreatitis and other gland disorders, helps explain malabsorption and related symptoms, and informs management such as enzyme replacement and treatment of the underlying disease.

Soft-lithography was utilized to produce a representative true-scale model of pulmonary alveolated airways that expand and contract periodically, mimicking physiological breathing motion. This platform recreates respiratory acinar flows on a chip, and is anticipated to facilitate experimental investigation of inhaled aerosol dynamics and deposition in the pulmonary acinus.
