Baseline Glucose

Baseline glucose is the initial concentration of glucose in the blood, typically measured before a treatment, test, meal, or other intervention, and provides a reference for interpreting later changes. Its level reflects glucose homeostasis, in which insulin promotes glucose uptake and storage while glucagon supports glucose release when energy availability falls. In medicine, baseline glucose measurements help assess metabolic status, identify abnormal regulation, and establish comparison points in diabetes screening, treatment monitoring, and clinical research. Comparing follow-up values with baseline can reveal responses to medications, lifestyle changes, or physiological stress and support more consistent evaluation of patient outcomes.

Assessing Glucose Uptake in the Motor Neurons of Drosophila Larvae with Upregulated Glucose Metabolism

The video demonstrates a technique for measuring glucose uptake in Drosophila larval motor neurons using a fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET)-based intracellular glucose sensor. After dissecting the larvae to expose the ventral nerve cord, the motor neurons are visualized through the fluorescence emitted by the sensor's donor fluorophore. When stimulated with glucose, FRET between the sensor's donor and acceptor fluorophores triggers the emission of fluorescence from the acceptor,...
