Bladder Pain Model

A bladder pain model is an experimental system used to reproduce and study the biological processes that cause or sustain pain arising from the urinary bladder. Depending on its design, the model may simulate urothelial irritation, inflammation, tissue injury, or heightened activity of bladder sensory nerves, allowing researchers to examine how local signals reach and sensitize the nervous system. In medicine, bladder pain models support investigation of conditions such as interstitial cystitis, evaluation of analgesic and anti-inflammatory treatments, and identification of cellular or molecular targets for improved diagnosis and therapy.

Approximately 3-8 million people in the United States suffer from interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS), a debilitating condition characterized in part by pelvic pain. In order to study nervous system contributions to the condition, a physiological model of urinary bladder pain is used in mice and rats.
