Bronchial Stump Reinforcement

Bronchial stump reinforcement is a surgical technique used to strengthen and protect the closed bronchial end after lung resection, particularly when postoperative leakage is a concern. It works by covering the stapled or sutured stump with vascularized tissue, such as pleura, pericardium, intercostal muscle, or omentum, creating a protective seal and supporting healing; selected sealants may provide additional coverage. In thoracic medicine, this approach aims to reduce the risk of bronchopleural fistula, a serious connection between the bronchial tree and pleural space, and may be especially valuable after pneumonectomy or in patients with impaired healing. Proper reinforcement can improve postoperative safety and recovery.

Bronchial Thermoplasty: A Novel Therapeutic Approach to Severe Asthma

2010

Bronchial thermoplasty is a non-drug procedure for severe persistent asthma that delivers thermal energy to the airway wall in a precisely controlled manner to reduce excessive airway smooth muscle. Reducing airway smooth muscle decreases the ability of the airways to constrict, thereby reducing the frequency of asthma attacks.

Positive Reinforcement Studies

Researchers study learning of a behavior through the use of operant conditioning. This type of learning involves associating the behavior with a consequence, which is a reward or punishment. If the consequence is a reward, it leads to reinforcement of the desired behavior. One type of reinforcement approach is positive reinforcement, where the behavior is rewarded with an artificial, natural, or social reinforcer. Studies using positive reinforcement as a tool can help tease out important...

Primary Human Bronchial Epithelial Cells Grown from Explants

Here we describe a detailed method for growing primary human bronchial epithelial cells from explants of human bronchial airway tissue including differentiated growth on an air-liquid interface. This method provides an abundant source of primary cells for investigating the role of the airway epithelium in human lung health and disease.

Operant drug self-administration and conditioned place preference (CPP) procedures are expansively used in research to model various components of drug reinforcement, consumption, and addiction in humans. In this report, we combined traditional CPP and self-administration methods as a novel approach to studying drug reinforcement and addiction in rats.

The Bronchial Tree

The human bronchi and bronchial tree play a crucial role in the respiratory system, facilitating the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide. Let's delve into the intricate structure and functions of these respiratory components. The trachea, commonly known as the windpipe, is a tube that connects the larynx (voice box) to the bronchi. At a point called the carina, it bifurcates into two primary bronchi. The right primary bronchus is wider, shorter, and more vertical than the left primary...
