Caudate Lobe Resection

Caudate lobe resection is a hepatobiliary surgical procedure that removes all or part of the liver’s segment I, often to treat a localized tumor while preserving adequate functioning liver tissue. The operation is technically demanding because the caudate lobe lies deep between the inferior vena cava, portal vein, hepatic veins, and bile ducts; surgeons therefore mobilize the liver and carefully control these vascular and biliary structures before transecting the parenchyma. It may be performed for hepatocellular carcinoma, cholangiocarcinoma, or selected metastatic disease, either alone or with a larger hepatectomy. Understanding its anatomy supports safer planning, minimizes complications, and improves oncologic resection.
