Circulatory Death Donation

Circulatory death donation is the recovery of organs for transplantation after a patient’s death has been determined by the permanent cessation of circulation and breathing. In this process, life-sustaining treatment is withdrawn or the heart stops unexpectedly, clinicians confirm death according to established criteria, and organ preservation begins promptly to limit ischemic injury. Donation may provide kidneys, liver, lungs, and other tissues for patients with end-stage organ failure, expanding the donor pool beyond donation after brain death. Its practice requires careful coordination among critical care, transplant, and donation teams, with informed consent and ethical safeguards to protect patient dignity and ensure that death is declared independently of transplantation decisions.
