Lactate Extraction Ratio

Lactate Extraction Ratio is a physiological measure of the proportion of circulating lactate removed by a tissue or organ as blood passes through it. It is typically calculated from the arteriovenous concentration difference divided by the arterial lactate concentration and expressed as a percentage; positive values indicate net uptake, whereas negative values indicate net release. In medicine, the ratio helps characterize regional lactate metabolism and the balance between production and clearance, supporting assessment of tissue perfusion, organ function, and metabolic responses during illness or physiological stress. Interpreting it alongside blood flow and lactate concentrations can clarify whether elevated lactate reflects increased production, impaired clearance, or both.

Colorimetric Assay for Quantification of Lactate in Test Samples

2025

This video describes a colorimetric assay for lactate measurement in cell lysates by using the lactate dehydrogenase enzyme. This enzyme converts lactate into pyruvate, along with the conversion of NAD to NADH that reacts with tetrazolium dyes and gives a colored product that can be measured spectrophotometrically to quantitate the lactate.

This video demonstrates the lactate dehydrogenase assay to detect inflammasome-mediated macrophage death. The macrophages are exposed to lipopolysaccharide for priming, followed by exposure to nigericin to cause inflammasome-induced cell death, which is determined by the lactate dehydrogenase assay.

Liquidity Ratios: Current Ratio

2024

Liquidity management involves strategically acquiring and using cash or near-cash resources, such as marketable securities, treasury bills, or short-term deposits, to ensure the company can meet its cash obligations as they come due. The current ratio, calculated by dividing current assets by current liabilities, is a valuable tool for evaluating a company's liquidity. Current assets are resources that can be quickly converted into cash, typically within a year. These include cash, cash...
