Over-the-wire Balloons

Over-the-wire balloons are catheter-based medical devices used to dilate narrowed blood vessels and support minimally invasive treatment. They combine an inflatable balloon catheter with a lumen that tracks over a guidewire, allowing the operator to steer the device through tortuous anatomy before positioning it across a stenosis. Inflation under controlled pressure expands the balloon, applying radial force to widen the vessel and improve blood flow; deflation permits removal while the guidewire maintains access. In medicine, these devices are used in coronary and peripheral angioplasty, where accurate placement can restore perfusion and treat vascular obstruction through small access sites.

Source: Ricardo Mejia-Alvarez and Hussam Hikmat Jabbar, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI Hot-wire anemometers have a very short time-response, which makes them ideal to measure rapidly fluctuating phenomena such as turbulent flows. The purpose of this experiment is to demonstrate the use of hot-wire anemometry.

Animal models of atherosclerosis are essential to understand the mechanism and to investigate newer approaches to prevent plaque development or rupture, a leading cause of death in the industrialized world. This protocol uses a combination of balloon injury and cholesterol rich diet to induce atherosclerotic plaques in rabbit iliac artery.
