Penetration Aspiration Scale

The Penetration Aspiration Scale (PAS) is an eight-point rating system used to describe the entry of food, liquid, or secretions into the airway during swallowing. It distinguishes penetration, in which material enters the laryngeal vestibule but remains above the vocal folds, from aspiration, in which material passes below them, while also grading depth and whether the person clears the material. Clinicians apply the PAS during instrumental assessments such as videofluoroscopic swallowing studies and fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing to characterize dysphagia, compare swallowing safety across conditions, and evaluate responses to therapeutic interventions. Consistent scoring supports communication, clinical decision-making, and research on swallowing disorders.

2017

The goal of this protocol is to alter the penetrance of lethal skeletal mutant phenotypes in zebrafish by selective breeding. Lethal mutants cannot be grown to adulthood and bred themselves, therefore this protocol describes a method for tracking and selecting penetrance through multiple generations by progeny testing.

Fluid Aspiration from Mouse Glomeruli: A Method to Aspirate Glomerular Fluid from Mouse Using Two-Photon Mediated Micropuncture

Hydronium and hydroxide ions are present both in pure water and in all aqueous solutions, and their concentrations are inversely proportional as determined by the ion product of water (Kw). The concentrations of these ions in a solution are often critical determinants of the solution’s properties and the chemical behaviors of its other solutes. Two different solutions can differ in their hydronium or hydroxide ion concentrations by a million, billion, or even trillion times. A common means of...
