Post-operative Day 5

Post-operative Day 5 (POD5) is the fifth day of clinical recovery after an operation, a time point used to organize postoperative assessment and communicate a patient’s progress. Clinicians interpret this milestone through serial review of vital signs, pain, wound appearance, gastrointestinal and urinary function, mobility, and laboratory findings, comparing current status with the expected recovery course rather than relying on the calendar date alone. In medicine, POD5 assessment can identify improving recovery or prompt evaluation for complications such as infection, bleeding, thromboembolism, ileus, or delayed healing. It also supports decisions about treatment, discharge readiness, follow-up, and patient education.

Diffuse noxious inhibitory control, temporal summation and wound hyperalgesia testing are demonstrated in the obstetric patient. These tests evaluate inhibitory and excitatory mechanisms of pain processing and are here utilized to evaluate endogenous analgesia at different time-points during pregnancy and the peripartum period to help reveal individual s risk for persistent pain.

In this protocol we describe a method of operant learning using sensory stimuli as a reinforcer in the mouse. It requires no prior training or food restriction, and it allows the study of motivated behavior without the use of a pharmacological or natural reinforcer such as food.
